RRT PRESS RELEASE

Friday, 23rd October 2026

As the weather starts to warm up, Bairnsdale Rapid Relief Team (RRT) volunteers have supported fire management agencies preparing for the upcoming fire season, serving hundreds of meals at the Tambo Pre-Season Briefing in East Gippsland.

Eight RRT volunteers served 200 meals to personnel attending the briefing, ensuring attendees could focus on planning, coordination and preparedness activities ahead of the warmer months.

The event brought together representatives from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Parks Victoria and the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) to discuss operational updates, coordination arrangements and priorities for the season ahead.

Hosted at the Wangun Amphitheatre at GLaWAC, the briefing highlighted the importance of collaboration between agencies and Traditional Owners in caring for and protecting Country while preparing for emergency response activities.

RRT Team Leader Nicholas Hocking said the opportunity allowed volunteers to support those working to safeguard local communities and the environment.

“As agencies prepare for the fire season ahead, it was a privilege for our volunteers to provide practical support by keeping everyone well fed throughout the day. These briefings play an important role in ensuring emergency personnel are prepared and coordinated before the season begins.”

District Manager for Forest Fire Management Peter Brick thanked the team for its support.

“It was great to be supported by RRT, who provided an awesome barbecue for us. A huge thanks to RRT for coming and helping out, and to all the crews for supporting us today,” Mr Brick said.

The pre-season briefing provided an opportunity for participating organisations to share information, align their response plans and strengthen partnerships ahead of the summer period.

Through practical assistance and catering support, RRT helps bring emergency personnel and partner organisations together as they prepare to protect local communities and the environment.
