US – San Antonio RRT assist with the Susan G Komen Race for The Cure April 9th, 2016
RRT was enlisted to help out at the 2016 ‘Race for the Cure’ event in San Antonio on April 9th, 2016.
Race for the Cure is a 5k walk/run held across the USA to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. The San Antonio event tops 20,000 participants every year.
The race begins and ends at the Alamodome in downtown San Antonio. The race itself winds 5km through downtown San Antonio, over the riverwalk and past the Alamo and finishes back at the Alamodome.
The start time for the RRT volunteer shift was 4:30am, projected to finish up at 11:00am. The race start time was 8:00am.
Upon arrival and check in the team were informed that one of the other volunteer teams, a local high school band, had not arrived and that RRT was to take over their duties for the day. This entailed setting and operating the first water stop of the race. The volunteers loaded up and headed out of the Alamodome to go to the location for the first water station. Here the volunteers unloaded tables, disposable cups and gallon containers of drinking water out of the back of a truck.
Once unloaded, the tables were cleaned then the cups of water set up. Each table needed to be covered with cups 1/2 full of water and stacked 5 high! The estimated total amount of cups set up were 13,400!! This took over an hour, a few of the band members arrived in the meantime and we worked hand in hand with them to get the station ready for the race.
Here is a note from the event coordinator:
“I wanted to say THANK YOU to the Rapid Relief Team for volunteering at our Race for the Cure. We threw your team in every direction and I so greatly appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to serve!”
The funds raised through this event provides breast cancer screening, diagnostics, treatment, survivorship, education and research for those in our community who need help the most! Last year, we provided over 16,000 breast cancer services to women and men in Bexar County.
The success of our Race would not be possible without the help of our awesome volunteers. Your Team went above and beyond.
I hope you consider coming back next year. I know Murphy wouldn’t have it any other way!”
