The Alzheimer’s Society recently held a ‘Memory Walk’ at Portsmouth to help fund their work to fight against dementia. Currently more than a tenth of deaths in England and Wales are caused by the symptoms of dementia and there are approximately 850 000 people living in the UK with the condition.

The event was held on Saturday 26th September.  Over 400 walkers assembled on Southsea Castle Green early on Saturday morning. The RRT were there before the walkathon participants arrived, helping set up tents, preparing water distribution points, finalising route markers and making sure the event went as smoothly as possible.

Walkers of all ages and abilities turned up to take part, with some intending to take a 3km route, and others a 10km route. The RRT were present along the route to help with rubbish collection, refreshments and route guidance. The walk was opened by the Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Frank Jonas.

Once the ribbon was cut, the walkers surged forward, and split off into their various routes. The RRT provided guidance and support to the walkers en route.

The route took in much of Portsmouth’s iconic seafront and landmarks such as the War Memorial, Spinnaker Tower and the Historic Dockyard.

When the weary walkers returned, they were met by the RRT volunteers who had been given the job awarding medals to each participant as a token of thanks for their support.

The RRT water was also gratefully received, with nearly 100 bottles being distributed in an hour. An ice-cream van and a burger bar were set up by local businesses for those in need of something a little more substantial.

The Memory Walk raised £10,000 for the Alzheimers Society, and greatly contributed to the foundation’s work in research, education and care provision.
