AU – RRT Mundaring Provides Food & Refreshment at 75km Trek for MS
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative condition that damages the central nervous system, creating major health problems for sufferers. There is no known cause or cure for this disease, which affects approximately 20,000 Australians.
The MS Society of WA provides much needed support to people with MS and their families living in Western Australia. It also provides funding for research into finding a cause & a cure for this disease. As a not-for-profit organisation, much of the funding for the services provided by MSWA comes from sponsorship, donations & fundraising events.
One such event is The Rotary Team Challenge. Now in its third year of running, The Rotary Team Challenge was organised by the Rotary Club of Osborne Park for Saturday the 2nd of May 2015. The challenge involved a 75km, 50km or 22km run, walk or bike ride from Northam to Swan View following the scenic Kep Track and Railway Heritage Trail.
With participants starting off as early as 6am the day was a long one, but it turned out to be a beautiful, sunny & cool day – perfect conditions for the long trek through bush country. The event attracted 152 participants, some from as far as Sweden & Brazil, and a child of 11 years completing the 50km course from Bakers Hill. The first members to complete the course began arriving at the Old Railway Station in Swan View at around 3.00pm; with the final contenders crossing the finish line at around 6.30pm.

The final checkpoint in Swan View was a hive of activity through the afternoon, with support groups, volunteers and event personnel gathering to welcome the team members over the line. The Mundaring Rapid Relief Team assisted the effort by donating water bottles for the checkpoints throughout the course, and a sausage sizzle and refreshments at the finish line.

The 19 RRT volunteers were kept busy serving more than 250 meals to the hungry teams throughout the evening. The event was a huge success, raising over $70,000 for The MS Society. RRT was thrilled to be able to assist with this effort and their contribution was greatly appreciated, with commenting on the excellent teamwork and the efficiency & professionalism exhibited by the RRT volunteers.
