RRT: Delivering Essential Aid to Ukraine’s Displaced
As the war in Ukraine reaches over its two-year mark, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) remains dedicated to supporting displaced individuals by delivering essential food and personal care supplies. Volunteers from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Sweden have joined forces to ensure Ukrainian refugees receive the critical aid they need during this ongoing crisis.
The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) continues to build connections with those impacted by the conflict in Ukraine, hearing firsthand how their support has made a difference. One mother from Ukraine, who is raising her son with a severe disability on her own, shared some of the most significant challenges she has faced during these difficult times. Her story highlights the critical need for continued support and the difference RRT’s assistance has made in her life.
In response to her needs, RRT delivered an RRT Food Box to this mother. She expressed that her greatest need was for diapers and wet wipes. Grateful for the support, she reflected on the kindness she has experienced, stating, “It is very nice to see manifestations of humanity and care.” She also shared her story with our volunteers, saying, “I am raising a son with a severe form of disability alone. We were forced to leave our home due to the war. My son is an adult, 19 years old, but he cannot move independently. Thank you very much for your help.”
Before the conflict began, over 2.7 million people with disabilities were registered in Ukraine. Although there is no specific data on how many of these individuals have fled the country, the UN Refugee Agency estimated in July 2022 that 13% of families fleeing Ukraine included at least one member with a disability. This statistic further emphasises the need for targeted support for the most vulnerable, like this mother and her son.
