A Mother’s Resilience: How RRT Supports Families Affected by the Ukraine War
Two years into the Ukraine war, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) has been working to deliver emergency food and personal care supplies to the displaced. Volunteers worldwide, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Sweden, have united to provide essential aid to Ukrainian refugees.
RRT has been connecting with individuals in Ukraine; many have shared their stories about how RRT has supported them. One mother from the Donetsk region offered insight into her experiences.
The Donetsk region has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict, leading to widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, and public services. Many civilians have been displaced, with thousands fleeing to other areas of Ukraine or abroad. The conflict has disrupted industries, resulting in rising unemployment, while essential services like healthcare and education have suffered greatly. For this mother, the constant threat of violence has profoundly affected her children, who have felt the impact of the unrest.
This mother from the Donetsk region has four children. They had visited the Poltava region just 14 days before the war began, which meant they could never return to the home they once knew. Despite the challenges of the conflict, she has ensured her children continue their education while facing tremendous hardships. To support her family, she began making dolls to raise funds for soldiers. Unable to find a job and without one to help care for her children, she emphasises, “Every bit of help helps us survive.”
She shared,
When RRT volunteers asked her what more help she needed, she mentioned, “Food, hygiene items, laundry and household supplies, quality clothes, personal appliances like a washing machine, electric oven, and gas stove, plus bed linens, towels, and blankets made of synthetic materials.”
She expressed her gratitude for RRT’s support, saying, “It eased the burden on our family’s modest budget.”
RRT continues to do what it can to support families like hers.
