Because no person who is homeless should feel like they’re walking alone.

Imagine waking up on the ground on a cold winter’s morning, and having to walk the streets to get breakfast, a cup of tea, or a hot shower. This is the reality that faces some 6,000 people in South Australia every year. Homelessness can happen to anyone.

Hutt St Centre is an agency providing trusted essential and professional services to people facing homelessness and those at a disadvantage in Adelaide.  Their purpose is to end homelessness for every person who walks through their doors.  They do this by helping people who are challenged by homelessness to rebuild their lives, with care and without judgment.

Each year Hutt St Centre serves 50,000+ meals and offers case management and support services to nearly 2,000 people. Showers, laundry facilities, visiting health professionals, an aged city living program for older clients, recreation activities, education and training, legal aid and assistance with finding housing are provided to the 200+ homeless people who visit Hutt St Centre each day.

On the 31st of July, the Hutt St Centre ran their seventh annual Walk a Mile in My Boots fundraiser in McLaren Vale which provides an insight into what people who are vulnerable and experiencing homeless face each cold winter morning.

The event is one of many similar ones taking place around the country as part of the National Homelessness Prevention Week. About 6,000 people experience homelessness in South Australia each year.

People are invited to take an hour out of their day to join thousands of South Australians and find out how it feels to be facing disadvantage and homelessness by walking a mile to show their support for people facing homelessness.

The Adelaide RRT team provided the walkers with a ‘Traditional Hutt St Centre BBQ Breakfast’ and were equipped with 200 rolls, 5kg of bacon and 144 eggs as well as tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The rolls were kindly donated by The Cottage Bakery and the bacon and eggs by Coles McLaren Vale.

The RRT team arrived at 6.30am to a chilly start, as the temperature was around 4 degrees.

The first walkers started coming in at around 7.30am, and the event ended at 9.30am.

As a continuation of their National Homelessness Week campaign, Hutt St Centre held another ‘Walk a Mile in My Boots’ event, this time in Adelaide.  This event was held on Friday the 7th of August 2015.

A volunteer team of 20 RRT members were once again a part of the 5,900 strong crowd who stepped up for this event to show support and assist in raising awareness of this cause.
