On Saturday 11th August 2018 Bundaberg QLD Cancer Council held their annual Relay For Life event.

Relay For Life is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services. Relay is a chance for the Bundaberg community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives.

Relay For Life began in the USA in May 1985 when colorectal surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. He spent a grueling twenty-four hours circulating a track in Tacoma, Washington, and raised over US$27,000, and showed that one person really can make a difference.

Since then, Relay For Life has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. Celebrated by more than 4 million people in over 20 countries, this inspirational overnight event empowers and unites local communities to fight cancer.

Relay For Life began in Australia in 1999 when the Victorian community of Murrumbeena raised over $75,000 for Cancer Council. Relays are now held in every Australian State and Territory, with more than 134,000 participants raising over $14 million each year. Every dollar raised goes towards funding Cancer Council’s vital research, prevention and support programs, many of which help people in your community every day.

As in previous years The Cancer Council asked Rapid Relief Team to participate with food supply and we were only too glad to contribute club sandwiches, cupcakes and to make tea and coffee for all the enthusiastic attendees!

The Rapid Relief Team was on site by 7:30am to assist with car park marshalling.

As afternoon tea time was nearing, Rapid Relief Team then arranged afternoon tea and water stations for a 2:00pm kick off to the event, and enjoyed rewarding the walkers by serving afternoon tea and refreshing bottled water to ensure everyone was well fed and hydrated!

It was an amazing event attended by a variety of high-profile supporters including politicians and the CEO of Cancer Council Queensland. Channel 7 and News Mails also provided a great presence and media coverage for the event!

Check out some of the vibes captured during the day!
