On an early winter morning, Saturday, December 10th at 7:00 a.m., RRT Omaha gathered at the Strategic Air Command Museum to assist with the 2016 annual Jingle Bell Run for the Arthritis Foundation. Arthritis is an informal name in reference to more than 100 types of joint diseases. The goal was to raise $45,000 through this event. The money raised from this event is used to help find a cure for Arthritis and provide educational programs and services for victims. This is a 5K and 10K run where the participants are encouraged to wear holiday costumes. The Arthritis Foundation works with scientists to find a cure for this disease that inflicts over 53 million adults and 300,000 children in American.
Volunteers assembling the signs. This year we were able to provide assistance to between 250 and 300 eager participants. The first task was to assemble and set up signs and distribute them along the route. As RRT members, we were also given the responsibility for the set up and preparation of the complimentary meal that was offered to the runners after the event.
Placing the signs along the routes. This run started at 9:00 a.m. and lasted until about 10:30 a.m. The route started at the Strategic Air and Command Aerospace Museum, went across their parking lot and then crossed into Eugene T. Mahoney State Park following the trail for about 5K and ended back in the SAC Museum parking lot. The RRT members provided a water station along the route providing runners with water bottles and PowerAdes.
Water bottles for the runners. There were also RRT members who assisted with event parking and volunteering as parking lot attendants. RRT members were placed as crossing guards at all crosswalks to ensure the safety and navigation of the participants. After a quick meal for runners, we commenced with the clean-up. The whole event was wrapped up around 11:30. Many thanks to everyone that volunteered their time and came out to support this effort!
