Supporting the Skies: RRT Raises Over $20,000 for ROA Mining Rescue Helicopter

On February 13th, 2025, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) was proud to support the ROA Mining Rescue Helicopter Fundraiser held in Greymouth. Backed by strong community spirit and generous local support, the event raised more than $20,000 for the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, which funds the vital West Coast Rescue Helicopter service.
With 40 dedicated RRT volunteers on the ground, the team served up a total of 510 meals to locals who turned out in force to show their support. The mouthwatering menu featured 260 sausage sandwiches, 250 of RRT’s signature beef burgers, 350 hot chips, and 160 barista-made coffees. To help guests cool down, we also served 140 real fruit ice creams, 160 cans of soft drink, and handed out RRT-branded items including 200 sunscreens, 250 lolly packs, and plenty of smiles.

This wasn’t just a sausage sizzle—it was a full-day community event with something for everyone. Attendees enjoyed up-close access to the West Coast Rescue Helicopter, which was on display at the event, creating a rare opportunity for families and children to see the aircraft that plays a critical role in emergency response across the region.
Adding to the day’s buzz was RRT’s Rapid Sand Bagger Machine, which was on demonstration for locals to see in action. Recently deployed in real-time flood responses, the machine drew much interest from the crowd and highlighted RRT’s ongoing commitment to emergency preparedness and disaster response.
The event was also a chance to announce the arrival of a new rescue helicopter, currently en route from Sweden and expected to land mid-year. Excitement around this announcement added to the strong turnout and public enthusiasm.

Thanks to generous community contributions—including over $7,000 in food sales and additional business donations—the fundraising effort exceeded expectations. Notably, Goodman Fielder donated $650 worth of burger buns and sliced bread, and Prime Fluid Management contributed $640 worth of generator hire, helping RRT to maximise proceeds for the rescue service.
As one attendee put it, “Everyone appreciates the service the helicopter provides.” This sentiment echoed across the event, with countless stories shared of lives saved and the critical importance of having a fast-response air rescue service available on the West Coast.
RRT extends its heartfelt thanks to ROA Mining, the event’s major sponsor, and to everyone who came out to support the cause. It’s through collaboration, compassion, and community that we can continue to help those who help us in times of crisis.
