RRT Lancaster Supports Sellafield Emergency Exercise
When an emergency happens, every second counts, which is why the teams who respond to them never stop training.
On 20 October, police, fire, ambulance and Sellafield’s own emergency teams came together at the Sellafield site in Cumbria for a major emergency exercise. Working side by side, they tested how they would respond together if a real incident were ever to happen.
Exercises like this are long, demanding days. To help keep everyone going, nine volunteers from RRT’s Lancaster team were on hand with hot food and drinks, serving around 200 meals throughout the day.
For the responders, it was a chance to refuel between scenarios and take a well-earned break. And the feedback said it all.
“You don’t realise how fantastic you lot are,” one responder told the team. Another described it as “the best burger I’ve ever had”.
"It was a privilege to be there for the teams taking part. Exercises like this are how our emergency services prepare to keep us all safe, and if a hot meal helps them get through a long day, our volunteers are always glad to help.”

Supporting multi-agency exercises is an important part of how RRT serves emergency services across the UK. These days build the skills and teamwork that keep our communities safe, and it’s a privilege to play a small part by looking after the people taking part.
Thank you to everyone at Sellafield and across the emergency services who took part, and to our Lancaster volunteers for giving their time.
Established by the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church in 2013, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) provides quality catering and practical support to charities, government and emergency services in times of need.
