RRT Glasgow Supports Emergency Services in Glasgow Central Fire
The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) has concluded its welfare support efforts in Glasgow following the major fire near Glasgow Central Station on 8th March 2026. The blaze, which began in a vape shop on Union Street at approximately 3:45pm, quickly escalated, spreading to neighbouring historic buildings and resulting in a partial structural collapse. The scale and speed of the incident demanded an extraordinary response from emergency services, who worked tirelessly through the night to protect the public and contain the fire.
More than 60 firefighters were initially deployed, supported by up to 18 appliances and specialist high‑reach units at the height of the operation. Police Scotland, British Transport Police and multiple partner agencies also played vital roles in maintaining safety, managing cordons and supporting the wider emergency response throughout the city centre.
RRT Glasgow volunteers were called out by Police Scotland and began serving at 2:40am on the 9th March as the situation escalated. Over the full duration of the response, 22 RRT volunteers remained on site for 30 hours, serving 681 hot meals and refreshments to sustain frontline personnel as they worked in demanding and fast‑changing conditions. The team was grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside responders whose dedication and resilience were evident at every stage of the incident.
“RRT is committed to supporting the emergency services whenever and wherever we are needed. We are deeply grateful for the incredible work of all responders on site at Glasgow Central so far, and our volunteers are honoured to be able to provide practical assistance as this challenging incident continues.”
