US – Des Moines Jingle Bell Run / Walk on December 12, 2015

On Saturday, December 12^th, 2015, the Arthritis Foundation held a 5k run/walk at the Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeon facility. The Arthritis Foundation’s mission is to find a cure for arthritis. About 53 million adults and 300,000 children suffer from arthritis in the US alone. Funds generated from fundraising events go to research for finding the cure for arthritis.

The RRT arrived at the DMOS facility at about 6:30am to assist in setting up for the pancake brunch being held after the race. With all the volunteers’ help, within record time, the waiting room of the DMOS facility was transformed into a festive atmosphere. Then, the RRT & Kohl’s volunteers were transported to their stations along the 5k course.  Their job was to help block traffic (the course was along a busy street) and to make sure everyone followed the route.

At 9am sharp, the air horn went off signalling the start of the race and the 350 brightly dressed runners took off. This race was not for the faint of heart as it was raining and about 38 degrees F.! All walks of life participated – from children to elderly people to a barefoot runner to mums pushing strollers. The Grinch, Santa Claus and various other Christmas themed characters participated. Everyone was very eager and happy to support the Arthritis Foundation.

First place went to Justin Helbing who ran the 5k in 16:01! After the race was over, a pancake brunch was served to all participants. Chris Cakes made the pancakes with their special, one-of-a-kind pancake dispensing machine.

All in all, it was a successful day. The Arthritis Foundation raised about $40,000.
