UK – RRT support Richmond town centre fire
Fire crews from 11 fire stations were called in to fight a fire in Richmond, North Yorkshire, in the early hours of Saturday 6th June.
A delivery driver first discovered the fire and raised the alarm at 5.11am. It caused severe damage to several business premises, after spreading through a terraced, two-storey building. High winds caused the flames to spread quickly, and the fire was so severe that local residents were evacuated and several roads were closed.
No-one was injured by the fire, but the cost of the damage is estimated to be hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The RRT Rapid Relief Team from Harrogate attended the scene to provide support for the fire crews, who spent more than 10 hours fighting the blaze.
Despite the severely blustery conditions, the RRT members erected their shelter and served crews with hot and cold drinks, soup, and snacks. The incident commander expressed his sincere appreciation of the RRT’s support for the crews, which he described as “first class”.
