Around 8:30 am on August 15th, volunteers from the RRT team in Edmonton Alberta arrived at Sunridge Ski and Snowboard area in the heart of the Edmonton River Valley. They were there to assist with the operations at the Down and Dirty Obstacle Course Fundraising Event. The Down and Dirty Obstacle Course is hosted by the Alberta Cross Cancer Institute. The event was a 5 km race that included a wide variety of obstacles, hills, slip and slides, hurdles and a LOT of mud.

Every day 43 people from the province of Alberta are diagnosed with cancer and the Alberta Cross Cancer Institute is committed to helping these people by ensuring faster diagnoses, better treatments, enhanced quality of life and general assistance. This annual run helps to raise the much needed funds that will help the Alberta Cross Cancer institute reach its goal of investing 120 million dollars between 2012 and 2017.

The team of eleven RRT volunteers assisted the event coordinators by hanging signs, painting some unfinished obstacles, getting obstacles ready for the race and generally preparing for the racers to come through.

Volunteers then split into different teams to help kick off the event. Some helped with the Slip and Slide, an approximately 80 foot long slide created with tarps and a large volume of water from a fire hose. Others helped man the ladder and sea-can station or the scaffold and fire-pole station. There were also some handing out water bottles to the racers and ensuring that first aid teams got to injured runners.

After the race was complete there was the general disassembly and removal of obstacles as well as many kilometres of marking tape and large amounts of wood to be removed from the area. The event coordinators expressed their thankfulness for the volunteer’s help and assistance, but RRT was glad to be able to support at such a fun event.
