Cancer is something that is likely to affect every one of us at some point in our lives. Cancer is a leading cause of death in Australia – more than 43,000 people died from cancer in 2012. Cancer accounted for about 3 in 10 deaths in Australia.

RRT was contacted by the Ride to Conquer Cancer organization to assist again this year on the 9th and 10th of October 2015. The Ride to Conquer Cancer event is a 2-day event, involving a 100km ride from the Sydney Olympic Park to the Hawkesbury River at Windsor on the Saturday and a 100km return trip to Sydney Olympic Park on the Sunday. This is a ride not a race. It isn’t a ride for athletes, but for those who wanted to challenge themselves for a cause to help Conquer Cancer.

The RRT volunteers arrived around 8:00am, on Friday to install directional signs to guide the riders along the route from Sydney Olympic Park to Windsor. On Saturday morning the RRT volunteers arrived at 5:00am to guide the riders to the correct location.

They also assisted in handing out the rider’s packs and taking the final donations. The excitement and the determination to complete the ride ahead were well and truly evident. The riders spoke of the reward in being able to contribute something to the cause, and they told of what it meant to them personally.

The RRT volunteers then moved on to install directional signs to guide the riders along the return route from Windsor to back to Sydney Olympic Park.

The event this year attracted approximately 708 riders who raised a combined total of $2.3 million. It was moving to hear the stories of those that this disease has affected. The selfless commitment of riders, donors, volunteers and crew members alike was very impressive to see.

RRT was certainly thankful to be part of such a selfless, enthusiastic group of people, riding with a purpose. All members of the team were enthusiastic about being part of this event, and the opportunity to be included for such a great cause – Conquering Cancer!!
