The Granville Youth and Community Recreation Centre is a facility of Parramatta City Council. Opened in March 2003, the centre offers a variety of programs for the local community including programs and activities for youth, and a space for hire for functions and meetings.

The centre’s mission is to be a central meeting point for all community activities in the Granville area, and to provide a supportive environment that enhances the social, emotional and cultural development of young people and the general community.

The centre offers a variety of services for youth and community members throughout the year. By working closely with the Recreation Team at Parramatta City Council and other local organisations, the centre plays host to forums, festivals, youth activities and fast forward education.

National Youth Week (NYW) is the largest celebration of young people in Australia. Thousands of young people aged 12-25 from across Australia get involved in NYW each year.

This year the Granville Youth and Community Recreation Centre hosted events each day to assist this cause. The events were as follows;

7th April – Sports Fest – A series of different sports set up at the centre to encourage participation in exercise and sports supporting a healthy generation

9th April – MC Battleground – Our Voice, Our Impact – creating a space where young people can express their views and opinions through the mic

10th April – GYC Vibes – Jamming session with drums, guitar, keyboard and the mic with tutoring sessions available.

11th April – Youth Forum – Inviting several students from years 9-10 of local high schools to attend a youth forum. The purpose of the forum is to give an opportunity for representatives of young people in the Parramatta Local Government Area to share their views on the opportunities or challenges facing young people and how Council and local community organisations could support young people in the area through services, programs and activities.

12th April – Granville Youth and Community Festival – An outdoor festival, rocking a huge stage and DJ with performances by GYC/GMCC’s “Red Bulls Dance Crew”, GFormers, Dancekool, The Clique, Manea Pacifica, Abada Capoeira, Australian Cook Island Council, Aikido NSW, Hieroglyphs plus food stalls, information stalls, Zorb balls, jumping castle, face painting, balloon sculptures, clowns surrounded by the diverse culture with the Persian, Tongan, Cook Island, Brazilian and Lebanese communities!

Every day RRT was pleased to support National Youth Week and Parramatta City Council at Granville Recreation Centre. On Friday we fed people from “beyond the square” a community and artistic development team that provide opportunities for people with disabilities. We received some feed back from the creative director saying “Thanks again for the food and drinks on Friday the guys really appreciated it, we will definitely back I touch re any events we have in the year.”

Over 500 people, young and old, visited the park on Saturday for the Grand finale to enjoy the fun atmosphere, and to celebrate the advantage of growing up in Australia. The day was a brilliant display of the variety of activities that are supported by the local community to ensure that none of the younger generation be idle or aimless. There was something to interest everyone. Music, dancing, martial arts and performances were on show from many nationalities, with performers and contributors aged from 7 to 70. Songs were sung in languages that we didn’t understand, and traditional dances from Africa, Europe and Asia were performed that we hadn’t seen before, but happiness and joy have no cultural boundaries. Everyone is bound together by a smile. On the RRT stand, it was our pleasure to provide complimentary refreshments with a smile……
