AU – RRT Supporting Cystic Fibrosis Research
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common, life-threatening genetic condition affecting young Australians today. In Australia, one in 2,500 babies are born with CF, that’s one every four days. There is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis. In Australia, Cystic Fibrosis Victoria works through the Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust, which supports over $500,000 of research a year across Australia.
When the Shepparton Rapid Relief Team heard that Rob and Sue Dundas from Yarck were organising a major fundraising event to support Cystic Fibrosis Victoria, they were keen to help in any way they could. Rob and Sue’s daughter, 24 year old Stephanie, has suffered from CF all her life.
On Saturday 28th March 2015, “The Great Victorian Rail Trail” fun run and bike ride was held in a beautiful part of country Victoria, between the small rural townships of Yarck, Merton and Bonnie Doon. Over 70 people participated in the 40km bike ride departing from Yarck , while almost 80 people left from Merton for a 20km fun run finishing at the Bonnie Doon Pub.
The early morning was chilly, so hot tea and coffee was well received at Merton, while the teams departing from Yarck enjoyed a hot breakfast provided by the local Country Woman’s Association.
There were four road crossings on the track where RRT members were positioned to guide participants safely across the highway.
Two dog-legs along the track meant that marshals were required to slow down the riders, and three water stations were set up to provide hydration for the competitors.
The day was a great success and raised in excess of $44,000 towards helping children and adults with Cystic Fibrosis breathe a little easier. The Rapid Relief Team members were thrilled to be included in the event, which highlighted this debilitating disease and raised awareness among all participants and sponsors.
