AU – Giant Steps’ Big Day Out
Giant Steps, Tasmania is a not-for-profit, independent, specialist school for children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This school is the only specialised school for Autism in Tasmania.
On Saturday 2nd May, the RRT provided a “BIG DAY OUT” for the students and their families of the Giant Steps School. The event was designed to provide an interactive experience for children, carers, teachers, family and friends who are associated with the Giant Steps School.
It was a huge success!
The event was held at the Deloraine Community Centre Complex, with indoor activities such as a jumping castle, face painting, games and balloons and outdoor activities such as mini train rides. One little boy named Oscar had great fun running the length of the indoor hall then letting his balloons go – and blissfully watching them rise to the ceiling!). RRT hired a jumping castle for the kids to let off some steam.
The event was supported by the local first response team, who brought a fire engine to the event, and invited children to dress up in the fire protection gear. The kids also enjoyed the chance to try squirting the fire hose. Volunteer ambulance staff brought an ambulance, and the children were able to climb on-board. A local police officer brought his police vehicle as well! A local helicopter operator even did several low fly-bys to show his support for the event.
Inclement weather failed to dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the RRT organisation members or visitors to the event. Many members of the Giant Steps community expressed their appreciation for the interactive event that allowed them to enjoy the company of other families in similar circumstances, in a sympathetic atmosphere.
The RRT provided free refreshments and a barbeque lunch, followed by fresh fruit tubs which were very popular!
