RRT MEDIA RELEASE

Saturday, 10th October 2026

Rapid Relief Team (RRT) volunteers will support Blue Mountains Grammar School’s community walkathon, helping provide meals and refreshments as students, families and alumni come together to raise funds for charity.

The school’s traditional 45-kilometre Walk to Bungawarra, which has long raised funds for Compassion Australia, the Ibulanku School Project in Uganda and Greystanes Disability Services, is unable to proceed this year due to the closure of Victoria Pass.

Determined to continue the tradition of fundraising and community service, Year 10 students organised an alternative event, Walking 9 to 5, which will take place on Saturday, 10 October, at the school’s Senior School campus.

The whole-school walkathon will invite students, staff, families, friends and alumni to complete as many laps as possible of a two-kilometre cross-country course between 9am and 5pm. Participants can choose how long they take part, with everyone welcome, from Pre-K students through to alumni.

The event aims to bring the school community together while continuing to support the three charities that have traditionally benefited from the Bungawarra walk.

RRT volunteers will provide morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea throughout the day, with around 80 meals expected to be served at each sitting.

RRT Blue Mountains Local Team Leader Ron Simpson said volunteers were pleased to support an initiative that combines community spirit with fundraising for important causes.

“While this year’s Bungawarra walk has been impacted by circumstances beyond the school’s control, it has been inspiring to see students take the lead and create a new way to continue this important tradition.”

“Walking 9 to 5 is a fantastic example of a community coming together to support worthwhile charities, and our volunteers are delighted to help by providing meals and refreshments for participants throughout the day.”

Through its network of local volunteers, RRT regularly supports community events and organisations across the Blue Mountains, helping bring people together through hospitality and practical assistance.
