It’s that time of year again! On December 9, 2017, the annual Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell 5k Walk / Run returned to the cold and snowy streets of Chicago. All around Soldier’s Field the holiday spirit of helping others was in the air! From those fun lover folks donning Santa suits to those serious runners in athletic attire everyone was participating for the same cause – Raising funds for the Arthritis Foundation.

Arthritis and related conditions are affecting over 50 million Americans today! And, as many learned at the event, these conditions account for over “$156 billion annually in lost wages and medical expenses”. Year after year, across the country the Arthritis Foundation hosts this fun filled event to raise funds to support finding a cure. This year’s event in Chicago has so far raised $176,535.00 with donations still being accepted.

The RRT Rest Stop

Rapid Relief Team volunteers from Chicago, Illinois were happy to help with providing water and distributing refreshments to the race participants. “Everyone’s a winner!” was the call of the man handing out medals. At the finish line, runners were also greeted by the RRT volunteers offering a bottle of water or cup of Gatorade. Just beyond the finish line were many tables of other quick refreshments including protein bars, squeeze yogurts, fresh bananas, juicy Clementine’s, and more!

The fresh morning snowfall, icy wind and freezing conditions quickly sent participants back to the warmth of the stadium. Once back inside you could let your creativity show in the costume contest, listen and learn from speakers, or simply warm up! There was an encouraging, hope filled speech by Dr. Erin Arnold this year’s Medical Honoree from Orthopedics and Rheumatology of the North Shore. For those that missed the Rapid Relief Team – Chicago volunteers on the track found an ample supply of water bottles here as well.

Despite the weather conditions, this year’s Jingle Bell Run was again a success. Runners told of fighting the wind, but still pulled through to finish. Finding a cure for America’s number one cause of disability is no small undertaking. Rapid Relief Team – Chicago feels honored to have been able to assist the Arthritis Foundation once again.
