Standing Together in Tragedy: Supporting Mt Maunganui’s Frontline

At approximately 9.30am on January 22nd, an unspeakable tragedy unfolded at Mt Maunganui following a period of prolonged rainfall. A large landslide engulfed around 30 campsites and an amenities block located within the mountain’s beachside holiday park.
Within two hours of receiving a request for support from New Zealand Police, RRT volunteers from Tauranga mobilised. By 7.30pm, they were onsite, and by 8.00pm they were providing nutritious hot meals to those working to protect the community. Volunteers continued throughout the night as first responders carried out rescue operations in dangerous and challenging conditions.
Over the next 10 days, RRT continued to serve meals to New Zealand Police, first responders, and the families of the victims, providing more than 5,600 meals
While as always, volunteers provided some respite from the arduous task of the operation, it was also a unique experience for many, who found themselves offering emotional support to those impacted by the disaster.
Doug Sobey, RRT Event Team Leader onsite, reflected on how in desperate times like this, the community comes together so strongly. A range of donations came in from surrounding businesses, particularly Food Stuffs New Zealand through Mt Maunganui New World, which generously supplied the ingredients for the meals.
RRT volunteers were deeply moved by the resilience and selflessness of those on the frontline. Their dedication to serve the local community was inspiring to witness, and they felt honoured to have had the opportunity to play a role in supporting them.
In total, 216 RRT volunteers contributed almost 1,300 hours onsite across 28 shifts. A highlight for many was hearing directly from the recipients about the difference a simple, fresh meal and a brief moment of rest in a welcoming environment could make.
“We’re all so appreciative of your beautiful natured helpers, your detail of care and love as you served us fresh, nourishing food to keep us going. Most of us were running on little to no sleep day after day, night after night, just wanting to help the families. You have been a shining light in this dark time for our beautiful community.”

In April, RRT had the privilege of supporting an appreciation meal for those who attended the scene. Organised alongside the Bay of Plenty Police Force, the event provided the opportunity for reflection on the sacrifices and selflessness shown by all involved.
In the face of immense loss and uncertainty, it was the strength of the community that stood out most. From the courage of first responders to the quiet compassion of volunteers, this was a moment that showed the very best of people. RRT is deeply grateful to have stood alongside those affected, offering not just meals, but care, presence, and support when it was needed most.
