The unmistakable buzz of shears and the sizzle of the BBQ set the tone for a fantastic day of community spirit as the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) lent its support to Shear for Life, a major fundraising event hosted at Hindsridge Farm in Mid Canterbury.

Held over the first weekend of February 2025, Shear for Life brought together professional and amateur shearers, families, and supporters for a day of hard work and heart, all in the name of raising funds for cancer care. With an incredible 3,000 sheep waiting to be shorn and hundreds of attendees flocking to the farm, the event raised an estimated $150,000 for the Cancer Society—an outstanding result for a grassroots initiative.

RRT was right there at the heart of it all, keeping the crowds well fed with sausage sandwiches and our signature beef burgers. A team of 12 RRT volunteers served up 460 meals, ensuring that shearers and supporters alike had the energy to keep going throughout the day.

Local Team Leader Rod Kemp shared how proud his team was to be involved in such a meaningful day:

“Our RRT volunteers spent the day cooking up a storm and it was great to see so many families enjoying a day on the farm, watching some talented shearers, both experienced and amateur, and supporting an important cause. RRT and the Cancer Society have worked together for almost a decade, helping to provide meals to cancer survivors, or raising funds for cancer research, and we will be supporting the Cancer Society at Relay for Life events coming up in March and April.”
