The Weston Wright Lighting the Way 5K Run / Walk, is an event that helps raise funds for Programs supporting Blind Children. October 22nd, 2016 marked the 8th annual event that has taken place in San Antonio, Texas.  As the sun rose that day, The Valero Energy Corporation Campus Headquarters was already bustling with activity, as event coordinators and volunteers hurried to ready the area for the participants.

Off They Go!

The Rapid Relief Team from San Antonio assisted in setting up the grounds and making sure the trails were well-marked. Once the main area was ready for the day, and the trailers were ready for the walk to begin, RRT Volunteers headed off to set up the second water station along the route, where they manned a rest top for the walkers during the event.

Then the walk began! As both old and young participants passed by the RRT tent, their determination and dedication to the cause, shone from their faces! Since this was a smaller event of only around 250 participants, it wasn’t long before each participant had passed by the RRT tent and collected a RRT Water Bottle.  As the event came to a close, RRT packed up their station and headed back to the central area to help clean up the main grounds.

RRT Helped With Event Flow

This year the race portion of the event was chipped timed and managed by iRun and the walk portion was a terrific way to spend a Saturday afternoon with the family on the beautiful campus trails.  Awards were presented to the top female and male participants in eight different age categories and raffle prizes were also available for those who wanted to join in a little extra fun.

Refreshments For The Participants

All proceeds from this event benefit the SALB Blind Children’s Programs, which include Braille Training, Computer / Assistive Technology Skills, Mobility Training and Assistance with daily life skills. These amazing programs allow SALB to serve young blind children from birth through age fourteen and their families as well as the SALB High School to Work Transition Program.

RRT Water Station

RRT was truly privileged to assist the Blind & Vision Impaired Organization, dedicated to helping Blind Children Programs.  Although this was a small event, RRT was glad to be of assistance with making this event one of their best yet!
