Climb your way up 1,103 stairs? You’ve got this; give it a go! An epic fundraising effort, but - not for the faint hearted!

The Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge, now in its 18th consecutive year, is a fun and grueling challenging fundraising event for firefighters to raise funds and awareness for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).

900 firefighters race up Auckland’s Sky Tower to raise money for charity

20th of August 2022 was a day marked in the calendar of over 900 firefighters, who raced up 51 flights of stairs. These dedicated strong men and women put in the hard yards for Kiwis going through a different kind of challenge.

Fire crews from all over New Zealand, as well as Australia and the United States, take part in the climb.

LBC is New Zealand’s national organisation dedicated to supporting patients and their families living with a blood cancer. Every day eight children and adults in New Zealand are diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood condition.

LBC are not a government organisation and rely on the generosity of donors for fundraising.

RRT volunteers from Auckland put a step forward by cooking 50 bacon and egg McMuffins for event organisers then hearty BBQ burgers to spectators, participants, and their support teams throughout the day. All proceeds raised from the sale of food was collected by Leukaemia NZ.

Fighting fit – This young team came along to show their support to LBC.

Bottles of chilled water were also a welcomed refreshment from the crowds. RRT handed out over 1,250 bottles of water.

One competitor said, “It’s really good getting to the top, and having that sense of achievement, but also the fundraising side.”

The event raised $17,500 in 2005, its first year, and it now consistently raises over $1 million annually. By 2022, over $11 million has been raised for blood cancer patients and their families.

Our team were pumped to be included in the fundraising efforts and doing their bit to support LBC New Zealand. For more information on Firefighters Sky Tower challenge, visit  firefighterschallenge.org.nz
