On Monday, August 28, 2017, the Winnipeg Rapid Relief Team volunteers made many people’s afternoon just a little brighter and a little more bearable on a hot summer’s day! Five RRT members gathered at around noon (the hottest time of the day) on a busy street corner in downtown Winnipeg and handed out water bottles to passers-by for just over an hour.

About 765 bottles were handed out in total in approximately one hours-time, and everyone was very grateful for a refreshing cold drink on a hot summer afternoon. The temperature was around 31 degrees Celsius which is almost 90 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is extremely important to stay hydrated during the hot summer months.

Dehydration can cause serious symptoms that can lead to hospitalization in extreme conditions.  This RRT connection with the community was a welcome relief on such a hot day.  A lot of people go out on a hot summer’s day without even realizing how hot it is until they start exercising, and dehydration can set in very quickly without much warning.

In conclusion, the team was very happy to lead this event as it was rewarding to help out so many people in such a simple way, and also in a very short space of time!  One of the water bottles was later found in a park trash bin 10 kilometres away, which shows that someone appreciated the water on their long walk through the city!
