NZ – RRT assists firie’s battling Hawkes Bay blaze
The Rapid Relief Team of Hastings were only too pleased to help out the hard-working firefighters by providing meals over two days, starting from breakfast Wednesday morning through to Dinner Thursday evening.
Seven “long duration” fires had started in the region since Friday 31st January. Volunteers and professional firefighters from Waipukurau, Waipawa and Hastings were working in extreme conditions, battling temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius and lack of sleep.
A taskforce, predominantly from Wellington, consisting of 38 firefighters, a mix of rural, urban and career firefighters, were brought in on Wednesday evening to relieve crews.
